Disney Tech: Select Disney World locations to test new payment options for guests

For the last week, Cast Members  at select Disney World locations have been training on a brand new Point of Sales system – ‘Touch to Pay’.  The system is intended to expedite the amount of time it take for a guest to pay for merchandise, sundries, and dining experiences.

Upon check in, select guests will be giving a Key to The World card with RFID and asked to test the system and provide feedback.

At table service restaurants, for example, servers will carry to the table a handheld device to which the guests simply touches the card.  A receipt is printed and they are off to enjoy the World.  Indeed, it will save servers the back-and-forth.  Hopefully, it will save guests precious vacation minutes.

  1. Isn’t the big challenge going to be security. Unless the RFID card comes with some kind of security pin code, if you loose your card then anyone finding it could happily go on a spending spree and be out of the park long before you discover you’ve lost it. Disney are going to have to give some guarantees around the security of the card before anyone would be willing to use it for more than reserving a fast pass.

    • A very valid point, M. This is, of course, a problem even without an RFID enabled card. If one loses a card with charging privileges in a park, somebody could easily pick it up and start spending. Since there is no code to enter when you swipe, it’s always a threat.

Disney offers recovery in this situation, much like a credit card does. Guests simply need to report the card lost as soon as possible, if charges are made to the card they can be refunded.

With that said, I will gladly check into any new security features with the RFID cards – I am curious myself!
