The Lost Food Diaries: Retired Mickey Ice Cream Bars

To end the week, I thought we would continue our journey into the retired – but not forgotten – food of the Disney Parks

  • I bet that mouse tastes amazing…

There is a lot of food shaped like the Big Cheese.  Mickey’s head can be shaped into pizzas, lollipops, candy canes, macaroni and almost anything else hungry guests can wolf down.  It’s the perfect shape for portable munchies.  While creating Mickey, Walt was overheard saying  ”That’s gonna make a hell of a waffle one day”.

Ranking as one of the treats to reach the iconic food podium is the Mickey Mouse Ice Cream Bar.

Of course, you can still cool off with a slab of milk chocolate dipped ice cream shaped into three familiar circles.  While tasty and refreshing, they seem to lack the personality of the original bars from Good Humor Ice Cream.

Who remembers these beauts?

There is something to be said when food has a character all its own.  Let’s face it, kids love to eat things that are staring back at them – as long as they are made primarily of sugar.  Chocolate bunnies at Easter, gingerbread men, Sour Patch Kids – the list goes on.  Such a strange satisfaction in munching on Mickey’s vanilla flavored ear as he happily stared back at you.  He wanted you to enjoy him so.

  • Nostalgia…

Fear not, as the old style Mickey Bars live on.  Let the following pictures quell any doubt of their popularity and charm.  For only the legends get their place on apparel.

My personal favorite is this hat – which you can purchase here

Happy Eating (and Friday), friends
